DAUGHTERS OF THE GLEN #1 - #3

Daughters of the Glen Series #1-3  by Melissa Mayhue
Genre: Romance/Science Fiction - Time Travel/Fantasy
My rating: ★★★★☆

Last year I was in a thrift store and I came across these 4 Melissa Mayhue books for super cheap. I decided to pick them up based off of the description on the back which includes things like "fae prince, faerie magic, time travel, and SCOTLAND". Yes, I was filling the Outlander size hole in my heart! The only deterrent for me was the romance aspect.. I'm all for cute tid-bits of romance but full on steamy romance... ehh not my thing. I thought about Outlander though, and there are some steamy love scenes in that series, so I gave Melissa Mayhue's books a try and discretely hid the back cover pictures while in public 😳. I've read 3 of the 4 books I own and there are actually 8 books in this series. I'll give you my review of the first 3 books and then I'll get into what books are included in the series and so on.

Book 1 Thirty Nights with a Highland Husband

I feel like there is a lot going on with these books as far as genre goes. You have Connor MacKiernan, your Scottish warrior who also happens to be a descendant of a Fairy prince and is emotionally wounded and mistrusts women. Just right there you have history, fantasy, magic, and action. Then, you have Caitlyn Coryell who is from the 21st century and she's engaged to a man who is a complete jerk. What do you know, another emotionally wounded character. Now we have added in the present day, so time travel, and we've made both characters angsty. How's that for a cue of what's to come?

The main plot line for this book is Connor must save his sister.  By way of fairy magic Connor travels to present day and talks Caitlyn into coming back to the 13th century with him. Mind you, she was drunk and feeling sorry for herself in the love department. If some Scottish fairy showed up in my bedroom and I was in her state I'd say yes too!

I'll stop there so I don't spoil the book. Overall, Thirty Nights with a Highland Husband was a quick and easy read. It was just what I was looking for as a bedside table book. If you are missing Outlander and love the Fae I would absolutely recommend this book.

Book 2 Highland Guardian

When I moved onto book 2 I expected to continue on reading about Connor and Caitlyn. However, this book introduces you to more characters. Don't you worry though, if you loved Connor and Caitlyn they will be back.

Meet Sarah Douglas, a 38 year old romance novelist. She's struggling with writing so she takes a 3 month trip to Scotland hoping to resolve her slump. She also has a strange ability to sense emotions of people she touches.

Ian Cullough is introduced to Sarah when she's in Scotland and staying at what sounds to be an amazing cottage. Sarah suspects he's about 10 years younger than her and despite that she is attracted to him. Kind of creepy.. kind of okay I guess. It depends on who you ask. Ian is our half-mortal descendent of Faeries and he is what is called a "Guardian" of the Faerie Realm and he's actually been at it for 600 years.

This book ties up some loose ends from the first book because it goes into much more detail behind the world Mayhue is building. Again, the female character is emotionally ruined from her previous relationship and the Scottish Fae will save the day. I think I liked this book a bit more because it was set in present day so I could relate to the world more but I do miss the castle in the first book!

Book 3 Soul of a Highlander

Again, the third book will follow different characters but they do all tie into the first two books. If you missed the world from book 1 this is where you get more of the 13th century!

In Soul of a Highlander the main characters are now Mairi MacKiernan, related to Connor, and Ramos Servans, bad boy gone good from book 2. It was hard to hate Ramos in book 2 so I was really happy that this book expanded on his character.

Mairi makes it her mission to go back in time to save the last daughter of the MacKiernan family. Just like any fae book, you have the tricks and not so truthful yet so true language of the faeries. Knowing her family would not allow such a foolish trip back in time to change the future Mairi takes matters into her own hands but not before leaving behind a packet with details on where she would be. When she doesn't return Ramos is sent to retrieve her.

I really enjoyed this book because I definitely like the time travel aspect that reminds me so much of Outlander. This book also seems to have the highest review of the 3 on Goodreads, perhaps that is due to the world building in the first two books.

I will be picking up this series again at some point in 2018, especially with Mayhue's newest release. Below is the list of the rest of the books in the series as well as a secondary and tertiary series continuing with the character's from the first series.

THE LAST WISH

The Last Wish (The Witcher)  by Andrzej Sapkowski Genre: Fantasy My rating: ★★★★☆ Synopsis Geralt of Rivia is a Witcher. A cunning sorcerer. A merciless assassin. And a cold-blooded killer. His sole purpose: to destroy the monsters that plague the world. But not everything monstrous-looking is evil, and not everything fair is good... and in every fairy tale there is a grain of truth. I can't believe I waited so long to read this book. It has been 3 years since the video game, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, was released and I loved it so much. If you had not played the game I highly recommend it. The story line is great and the from what I remember the graphics were great. With that being said lets get into what I thought about the book. The book starts off just the same as the opening scene in Wild Hunt. I was immediately submerged into the world that I knew well from the video game. The book wastes no time, in comparison to the video game, a
